Sinds april 1993 loopt een tentoonstelling in een aantal Amerikaanse musea (Bozeman, Vancouver, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Indianapolis en Portland) over "Father Pierre-Jean De Smet, a Jesuit priest from Dendermonde, one of the most influential Belgians ever to have lived in the United States" met als titel "Sacred Encounters: Father De Smet and the Indians of the Rocky Mountain West".
De tentoonstelling is een initiatief van professor Jacqueline Peterson die geschiedenis aan de universiteit van de staat Washington doceert.
