In 1846 De Smet gave names to the Fiddle and Maligne rivers, today in Jasper National Park (Alberta, Canada).
Ships :
In 1873 captain La Barge christened his new packet "De Smet" and during WW2 a liberty ship was also named after the great missionary. Building started on August 5, 1943 and on Augustus 24, 1943 the "Peter Desmet" was afloat.
